Fight colds and flu with Elderberries

Cold and Flu season is in full swing right now and every where I go people are hacking away. Some people can’t even seam to kick the flu as it lingers for weeks, making them so miserable. Does all this seam familiar to you?  For years I was one of those people that constantly kept getting sick and once I was over it, bam again it came right back. It was like this year after year and I always battled with a low immune system, but of course that was due to a bad eating diet too.

Then one year as I was looking around the nutrition store, I ran into a friend of mine and we talked about many nutritional things, but her main purpose for being there was to get herself a bottle of Elderberry supplements. Well my reason for being there was to find something to help the cold I had been battling for weeks. So she started telling about how elderberry helps her get through flu season and helps to boost her immune system throughout the year. She had no idea why, but it was something another friend of hers referred to her.

Well this girl was listening. I figured what do I have to lose, i’ll just get myself a bottle and try it. Whoa, three days later that nasty little cold was gone, just little sniffles here and there, but gone. I kept taking it throughout the flu season and not once did I get sick again. At that time I thought well maybe it’s a coincidence, well have to tell you, far from it.  The following year I started back up during flu season and wha-la I would make it through.  When my husband would feel the signs of the flu coming on like cold chills, and achy bones immediately I would get him started on elderberry supplements and it would kick it in the butt. FLU BE GONE!

Back then  I didn’t know much about herbal supplements and I was afraid to give it to my boys being that they were to little. The around the time my son was in fifth grade he came down with a bad case of the cold and flu.  No matter what we tried nothing seamed to work, I then decided to give him 1 capsule. Being that he was a big boy for his age I felt he could handle it. Let me tell you by that evening his fever went away. The next day I gave him another capsule and I seen how much better he was getting so I continue to give him 1 capsule daily until he was 100% well.  From that point on I would give him elderberry supplement at the first sign of getting sick and kept him on it throughout the whole flu season.  As my youngest got older, I did the same for him too. Now years later here we are another flu season and we have survived it once again.  I can’t believe how many people have come to us asking about that berry I was talking about long ago.

This is one little berry that I believe in wholeheartedly.  I have shared this with many of my friends and family members, most have shrugged it off and never believed me while a small hand full tried it out of desperation and now are believers. I did do my own research on it just to see why this small berry is so powerful, here’s what I gathered.

Elderberries are fruits that come from a plant known as Sambucus Nigra. Some berries from Sambucus are toxic, but not the nigra. These berries are very nutritional with lots of minerals and vitamins, to include large amounts of vitamin C. Back in 1995 the Elderberry juice was used to treat a flu epidemic in Panama. Many people started recovering a faster pace and preventing it from spreading further. Being from Panama myself, I asked an aunt if she knows about this and they are great believers in what they call sauco. I even have relatives in Utah that have these plants in their back yards and make their own syrup to treat colds and flus.

Elderberry is good for your respiratory health and can soothe inflammation and irritation in your throat. It has certain antibacterial and anti-infectious qualities that are good for your immune system and helps to strengthen it. For those with autoimmune disorders having a strong immune system is a must and even then this berry can alleviate certain symptoms such as joint pain and soreness from inflammation. In addition it will help to promote bone strength and the development of new bone tissue. These are just a few of the benefits of drinking elderberry tea, juice or taking a natural supplement as there are many many more.

I do highly recommend doing a little more research on this wonderful little berry as it may aggravate those struggling with kidney problems and some other illnesses.  However, If you are tired of always getting sick and are able to try this miracle berry, as I call it, here are some helpful hints;

  1. If you feel your body starting to ache, start taking 2 capsules (1 in the morning and 1 early evening) or drink a homemade tea and stay on this daily. Just because you feel better don’t assume it’s completely gone. Stay on it for several days. This is where people make a mistake and stop taking thinking its completely gone.
  2. When we are at the height of flu season take one capsule daily to prevent yourself from getting the cold and flu.
  3. FYI folks – this also works for stomach viruses.
  4. If you are already sick, start taking elderberry and it will cut your sick time in half. But, stay on it until fully well.
  5. If you are flying on a plane, starting a few capsules 2 days before leaving. Sicknesses spread fast in airplanes or any close quarters. So taking these supplements are great ways to prevent from getting sick. Stay on a capsule a day until you return.

Don’t assume that if you take one capsule you are good to go for the whole flu season. Yes, unfortuantely I know a few that thought that and then said it didn’t work. Seriously, you have to stay on it.

In my recent visit to a whole foods store I seen Elderberry spray for children – yeah! Wish I had this stuff back when my kids were little. I do want to warn you on the elderberry syrups be very careful as they are loaded with sugar, which is just not good for any one especially those with autoimmune disorders. It is best to make your own tea or take an organic all natural supplement.

Here is a simple recipe for Elderberry Tea.

16 oz of water

2 Tbsp. Dried Elderberry

1  Tsp. Local raw organic Honey

Place the berries and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit for 1-2 hours. The longer it sits the better the tea as it pulls the many beneficial properties from the berries.

Strain it and pour it into a teacup. For a little sweetness add the teaspoon of honey. This elderberry tea has a sweet tart-fruity flavor that you will enjoy.

Note: you can get organic dried berries at wholefoods stores or order them online. Just make sure you get them from a reliable source since some berries are toxic.

When people start getting sick and just don’t know how else to kick the cold and flu it is then they start calling me asking what the heck it is that we are taking that keeps us from getting sick. I do have to mentioned that keeping your body strong with proper clean foods also helps in preventing many illnesses.
